I’m a newlywed currently studying at a seminary in the Philippines and planning to move to California with my husband by early 2016. It is easy to be overwhelmed by academics and make reading theological textbooks a substitute for quiet time with Jesus. Seminary classes can be encouraging and spiritually stimulating, but it’s not the same as when you just come as you are and be in relationship with Jesus; not worrying about memorizing concepts or historical facts, but just being there with Him. HelloMornings has allowed me to carve that time with the Lord everyday.
What does your morning look like?
I try to sleep by 11 p.m. and be up by 7:30 a.m. Try is the operative word 😉 I am cozy as I can be for my HelloMornings time! I eat cereal and drink coffee while I read Scripture. It helps wake me up more. Coffee with almond milk. I love the local beans here grown in the mountains of Benguet (pronounced “beng-GET”). It goes down smoothly and it is strong without being overwhelming. Depending on how busy the week was, I tend to sleep in during Saturday mornings! And on Sundays, I just rest – no work and read for leisure.
What does your HelloMornings time look like?
I am part of an Instagram group called Koinonia. My first ever HM challenge was the Caught By Jesus plan and I loved it! ESV Bible, one of the many journals I own, pen, coffee, and cereal are items that are part of my HelloMornings routine. For my planning time, I have a Moleskine planner. I prefer pen and paper over digital tools (I always forget if I don’t write it down). I’m still in the process of exercising in the morning! For now, I do little moves in the morning to wake me up and exercise at length with my husband before dinner.
What are some words of wisdom you have for our HelloMornings community?
I often don’t give myself enough grace when something doesn’t go as planned. But I’m grateful for the weekly HM emails that encourage and remind me that it’s about the process. I take a look back at why the morning didn’t turn out the way I wanted it, and I also try to remember throughout the day that the Lord doesn’t love me less if I missed a HelloMorning 🙂 I preach the gospel to myself, read later in the day, and start fresh the next morning!
My advice for someone just starting out with a morning routine: Pray for the will and strength to wake up in the morning (I sure need this). Pace yourself. Come hungry and expectant of the Lord. He truly fills those who hunger and thirst for righteousness any time of the day 🙂
