Essentials for Fueling Your Spiritual Health

When we are learning about plants, we are taught that in order for plants to grow they need sunlight and water. When learning about animals, we know that in order to survive they need water and food. As humans, we also need water, food, and shelter to survive. Surviving consists of elements that must be in place. Our walk with God isn’t just about surviving, though. When it comes to our relationship with the Father, we have been given all we need to thrive. 

His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and excellence.” 2 Peter 1:3

A thriving relationship with Christ includes some elements that seem so simple, but make all the difference. I’m going to share three of those elements with you. In order to fuel our walk with God, we must stay hydrated, stay fed, and get plenty of rest. Let me explain. 

Staying spiritually hydrated means that we are drinking deep of the Living Water. We all know that drinking sodas, coffee and even tea doesn’t keep us hydrated like water does. We can drink of many things besides water and feel like we’re doing fine, but in reality, we’re dehydrated and lacking the cleansing that water gives us. It’s the same with our spiritual lives. We must be intentional about what we are drinking. Netflix, Instagram, novels, even the news can give us information we need, sometimes even good things, enjoyable things, but they aren’t going to quench our heart, mind and soul’s thirst for the Living Water. God’s Word is what hydrates our souls. We must get our daily intake of the Living Water.

 “But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life”​. John 4:14

Staying fed is a practical way to fuel your body for any activity. We all know that “junk food” full of sugar and other unhealthy things slows us down. We become lethargic, slow, and unable to do the things we are called to do. Same in our spiritual life. We must feast on the Bread of Life in order to stay fueled. God’s Word is what fuels us for His work. Feeding ourselves upon gossip, reels, news stories, or Facebook articles will never satisfy our hunger. God’s Word truly satisfies, nourishes and fuels us. 

“Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35

Rest. We all crave it and probably feel like we never get enough of it. Creating time and space to rest is imperative when you are taking care of your physical body. Mentally, physically, and emotionally you need rest to allow you to do your best at all the things you are called to do each day.  When we allow ourselves to rest in Christ, we are now spiritually ready to do all that God has called us to do. Over the last few years I have been on a journey of relearning how to rest in Christ. I have had to lay down parts of my identity as I stepped out of a career. I have had to learn how to rest in Christ, not in my abilities, talents, gifts or striving. Just existing, in Christ, is hard to do at times. When we are truly resting in Christ, we are less worried about pleasing people, or outdoing ourselves which leads to  resentment and poor attitudes. We begin to serve God out of an overflow and joy that He has provided us. Truly resting in Christ allows us to be with Him before we do for Him. 

These three things are just the beginning of fueling yourself for a thriving walk with God, but they are essentials, and I hope you are encouraged to continue to take care of your spiritual health. You are so loved.
